Chapter 4
Kai was lost. For the longest time he denied this but was finally coming to terms with his dilemma. He opened a door thinking it would lead him to what he was familiar with. He figured he was wrong when blue illuminated the room. It was an inside pool. He had only seen this on t.v. so decided to explore a bit. Walking around the pool he saw that the walls were white with gold trim. There was a section labeled ‘Restroom/Shower’, he was about to go see what it looked like when he heard a weird sound from the pool. He slowly turned around afraid of what it could be. A ghost wanting revenge for those who killed it? A monster? Water spirit?
As he neared the edge of the pool looking into the water he realized they were air bubbles. Hurriedly he walked to see where they were coming from. “Please don’t let it be Sadako, please don’t let it be Sadako…” He whispered over and over but what he found was much worse. Taking off his shoes he jumped into the pool making his way to the center, he then swam back to shore just as quickly pulling himself and the other person out of the water and turned the body on its back.
“Uruha-san…” He breathed checking for a pulse. It was slow but it was a pulse, tilting Uruha’s head back slightly he plugged his nose and latched his mouth with his. Two breaths…nothing. Going back he breathed two more breaths…nothing again. Taking in all the breath he could he latched his mouth with Uruha’s once more and pushed all the oxygen he could into Uruha’s body in two breaths…nothing. “Breathe damn you!” In frustration he pounded on Uruha’s stomach and began to weep. Kai got up ready to call an ambulance, seeing a phone on the wall.
Two coughs. Three coughs. The sound of a throat being cleared. “Ow, that hurt…” Wide eyed Kai looked to Uruha in realization. In surprise he quickly made his way to him and hugged him tightly. “Hmm…feels good.” Uruha said drowsily.
“Sorry.” Kai said getting up and going to the equipment room to get two blankets.
Uruha rested on the ground wondering what just happened. Did he almost drown? When did Kai get here? Why was his body so exhausted? “Here.” Kai said interrupting his thoughts. After Uruha was wrapped in towels and blankets to help him keep warm, Kai picked up the bundle. “Do you know how to get back?” He asked and it sunk into Uruha’s head that Kai was utterly lost.
“On the other end of this room there is a door that leads to a hallway. At one end is another door that is the dog house on the other end lays the rest of the house.” Uruha muttered and Kai followed his instructions.
When they got to the staircase Uruha had gained more awareness. Kai had set him down on the stairs and made it so he was giving Uruha a piggy back ride instead of carrying him bridal style. “You must be tired, right?” Uruha asked but Kai shook his head in objection. The rest of the trip was in silence until Uruha had to direct him to where his room was.
Kai sat the man on a chair, and then went into his bathroom to start bath water. “You’re gonna need to take a warm bath to make your temperature rise. I’ll come back to check in on you, okay?”
Uruha stared at Kai taking in all that just happened. “Why?”
“Huh?”
“Never mind.” Uruha said realizing his dumb question. Kai shrugged and went to shut the water off in the tub.
“Where do you keep your pajamas?” Kai asked helping Uruha into the bathroom to sit on the toilet.
“Pajamas?”
“You don’t have any?” Uruha shook his head as if he never heard of such a thing. “So what do you wear when you go to sleep?”
“Boxers and a wife beater or a t-shirt…sometimes nothing at all…” Uruha thought aloud.
“Um…I’ll bring some pajamas for you too…” Uruha watched as Kai shook his head leaving and laughed.
“Thanks.” He mumbled after Kai left.
------
Kai re-entered Uruha’s room with his first-aid kit and a pair of pajamas. He knocked on the bathroom door only to have it open and show a very confused Uruha in towel. “Pajamas.” He replied setting them on a counter and closed the door.
When Uruha got out of the bathroom in Kai’s pajamas he then laid in bed. Kai came to his bed side and started to check his vital signs. To Uruha, Kai seemed like a professional doctor, an angel that saved his life and that was now taking care of him. He felt forever grateful. He watched as Kai got out a stethoscope and followed the directions of when to inhale and exhale.
“What did you have to eat today?” Kai asked taking notes on a mini note pad.
“Pocky, cheeseburger, and dried cuttlefish.” He answered remembering.
“And when did you eat this?”
“Huh?”
“When was the last time you ate?”
“Oh… before lunch.”
Kai slammed his note pad down and stormed out angrily. Uruha was confused as to what just happened, so he slowly exited his bed and made his way in search of his savior. When he got to the first floor he smelled a good aroma in the air and knew to go to the kitchen. Kai was there with in front of the stove banana shells, cane sugar, juice, cinnamon, butter, oil, and ice cream were beside him on the counter.
“What are you doing?” Uruha asked.
“Making you food. Most likely you had a cramp in while swimming and found yourself unable to swim.” Kai replied and turned to face Uruha. “You also have a bad diet, your body probably found itself unable to digest it all properly. Drink this.” Kai said putting two cups of water in front of Uruha.
“Why?”
“I bet you don’t drink enough water,” Uruha’s silence proved his assumption right. “, You need to re-hydrate your body and the more water you drink, the less toxins you harbor in your body. In short it’ll help you go to the bathroom…that’s probably the cause of your cramp.”
Uruha was stunned by Kai’s knowledge. He was reading him like a book and yet, he had such limited information. “What were you doing at the pool?”
“I was lost…Ruki doesn’t believe I can take care of myself and we had a fight over it. I needed some time alone…before I knew it, I was lost.” Kai chuckled.
Uruha laughed. “I’d say you got lost at the right time, I’ll make sure to thank Ruki for fighting with you.” He joked moving onto the second glass of water.
“Here.” Kai put a small cup with a teaspoon in front of Uruha.
“What is it?” Uruha asked looking at the mixture of banana with a honey colored sauce and vanilla ice cream.
“Banana Sprouster.” Kai replied sitting next to Uruha.
“Aren't you supposed to be feeding my things like, Poisson de la Mer?”
“I’m not supposed to do anything.”
“Well, couldn’t you have made something like that?”
“No.” Kai said eating a spoonful, Uruha left his untouched.
“Why not?”
“Don’t beg, ok?”
“Why?”
“It’s like three in the morning for one thing and you haven’t eaten anything practical for almost a day. If I try to feed you heavy things like Poisson de la Mer you could end up with a stomach ache for the next week. On the other hand Banana Sprouster is very light. It feels like nothing you can’t feel it in your stomach but it is very fulfilling. I picked this dish because you worked out more than you ate.”
“What?”
“You went to school, you went horse riding, and you went for a swim and nearly died.” Uruha was shocked that he actually recognized him while in the speeding car. “Banana is known for having good protein value and it also holds fiber. I used cane sugar instead of white sugar because white sugar is slightly processed, we don’t want more foreign things in your body. Your body needs something to chew on right now hence the butter and sugar. Almost everything else is just for taste.” Kai concluded taking another spoonful and humming at the taste. Uruha watched him eat; it was like watching a TV show that was his only. Uruha sat mesmerized.
“How do you know so much?” Uruha asked searching.
“Incase you forgot, I have a sensitive stomach. Ruki doesn’t know about this recipe, yet. I often use this when my body wants to reject food. After I eat this I recover easily…” Kai smiled looking ahead to him as if in his own world.
“Why haven’t you told him?” Uruha questioned with concern.
“He doesn’t let me tell him.” Kai said looking down.
Uruha nodded in compliance and decided to change the subject. He took the first spoonful of his Banana Sprouster and ate it. “Mmmmmmmm…” He gasped making Kai look to him suddenly. “This really is good!” Taking another spoonful he put it in his mouth trying to savor the taste before the food slid down to his stomach involuntarily. “This is really, really good! It goes so well with the ice cream!” Uruha chimed and couldn’t stop humming with each bite making Kai laugh.
“Here you’re spilling.” Kai said getting a napkin and wiping Uruha’s chin. Before Kai could bring his hand away Uruha caught it holding it in place.
“I want to thank you…” Uruha said looking into the core of Kai's dark brown eyes. “I’m going to make this break unforgettable for you.” Uruha spoke in a low breathless tone squeezing Kai's hand with his last words. Uruha got up from his chair then pecked Kai on the forehead making Kai inhale a shivered breath, then he coolly walked away, letting go of Kai's hand.
Kai watched as Uruha was leaving and watched him fall within the first couple of steps. “Ow!” Kai hurriedly went to help him.
“You rich guys always trying to be cool.” Kai sighed and helped Uruha back to his bed. “You’ll need to rest.”
“Stay.”
“Stop trying to be cool.”
“I mean it; I think I will feel very scared with out you here tonight.” Uruha pouted.
Kai thought about the pros and cons of staying and decided it wouldn’t hurt much to stay for the night. “Okay.” He said and Uruha readily pulled the other side of covers open for Kai. “You seem a little too happy about this…” Kai muttered.
“I am.” Uruha sighed settling his head on Kai's chest. “I won’t be alone tonight.” He mumbled and instantly fell asleep.
Kai looked down at Uruha’s head and sighed heavily. “Damned rich kids and their touchy feeliness…” He muttered falling into slumber as light blue sky started to shine into the room.
