Bhutan is opening itself up to modernization. Kinda sad, actually. I've always felt that it's one of the last pristine places on Earth, and now... the approaching corruption that comes with tourism and money in general seems inevitable. Sadness, neh? Of course it's a great bonus that I find the people there captivating for some reason. From the photos I've seen, anyway ;-)
I wonder if I'll get a chance to visit that place one day, or even to migrate there lol... simple livelihood, and more importantly, a tranquil place with no pressure to earn more moolah. I'm not surprised Singapore ended up almost at the bottom of the list when it comes to a nation of happy people. Many of their unhappiness are brought about by themselves.
Need a Benz, work more, get more pay, even if it's something they do not like to do. Once they get the Benz, time for that condo with all it's perks, etc. More work, more job hopping, more office politics, just to get that. With all that time and energy spent chasing after the tangible things, one has to wonder whether they will ever have time to work towards the intangible, towards a life that's more peaceful and restful, maybe?
Anyway, I know no country can be isolated forever, but it is a fine line indeed to thread. Only time will tell, I suppose... ah well, as long as there's some of the purity that captivated me in the first place when I do get a chance to go there is good enough for me.
