First day of classes today, and I found it enjoyable and productive--a good combination. Interestingly, I knew the names of about half the new juniors in math 3 from having had them in study hall last year. Weird--who'd'a thought? Can't tell what they're like except quiet. Of course, it's only the first day. Have been told already that I ( Read more... )

You should stand very close to the intimidated girl and keep asking her if she feels more comfortable yet.

Challenging assumptions is good, but I still dislike the use of "What the bleep do we know?" That movie was such nauseating nonsense.

No, I'm not gonna stand next to the intimidated girl...That would be deliberately mean, and I'm only deliberately mean to people I know who have hurt me. Otherwise, if I'm mean it's inadvertent. I might be a smart-ass (which might have behavior that would look externally as though it were mean), but that's only to people I know well enough that I think they'll know not to take the snottiness personally.

I never actually saw the movie, but I've heard from several people that it was very poor. However, the quote is a good one for discussion purposes, and since I got it from friedman's web page, I could get benefit from it without having to suffer through the movie ;-)

Pfft.

It was exceedingly poor. My mother saw it half a dozen times and scheduled showings for people because she doesn't understand diddly about physics. I watched it and scoffed and her response was, "Oh, so you with your high school physics class know more than all those Ph.Ds?" To which I could only respond, "Apparently so, mom."

I'm actually commenting because I'd like to take you up on dinner + Fry and Laurie, but I insist that you let me cook. I leave next Thursday and most of my friends have left, so I'll be doing next to nothing next week (scoring and memorizing two new Shakespeare monologues, probably reading those plays... its like recess), and you must be really busy, so at the very least I'd like to bring something over.
