Movie Review: The Crazies

In general I like “Zombie” movies for the simple fact that I love almost all apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic / dystopian / end of the world movies… Even if they suck.

But on occasion, I’m greeted with a rare moment of Horror/Apocalyptic cinema that doesn’t suck! SO happy.

********SPOILERS AHEAD*******

In “The Crazies” we come out of the gate swinging… It’s all “Oh, what a happy, peaceful town… oh, holy crap did he just shoot that dude in the face?” - Yes, he most certainly did.

Most movies involving a plague or virus or zombie-like infestation seem to pander to the audience with gore and “HOLY SHIT” moments. And while this movie does have one or two good jumper moments, it is not done as a gimmick or shtick. The jumper moments are done with taste to elevate certain scenes.

As for the gore… yeah, it’s a horror flick. I mean, the poster for the movie showing a pitchfork being drug across the floor isn’t there to promote baling hay. Shit no. It is there to be plunged into people in a horrific and somewhat terrifying way. Bonus points

Again… with most of this genre you have at least one character, if not more, that is just a complete douchebag. You know who I mean… the guy you know is going to make a mistake, get everyone killed, except himself, and then end up being run over by a truck as he surveys the scene crying “I told you so, man! I fucking told you!” splat! - The actors in this movie all do a nice job of being… well… likable. Not lickable… And lets face it… Timothy Olyphont has had a place in my hall of fame since his role in “The girl next door.” (rent it… it’s pretty entertaining)

So… yeah. Good movie. Good direction… Good scares without being stupid. And people getting shot in the face! … or stabbed with a pitchfork… or burnt to death with a flame thrower. Oh, poor Scott…
