You probably wont be staying in shared hostel room, as guest houses are so cheap. Carry your own lock though. A lot of guest houses will have just a padlock style hasp on the door. Just a small lock will do as people there are generally very honest.

Might want to re think taking the phone. Not only is south east Asia very hard on electronics, but I assume you intend to call on your phone using some sort of plan, which is always expensive. I bought a cheap cell phone in Asia and then switch out pre paid sim cards in the countries I travel to.

Thailand Malaysia and Singapore would be the easiest countries to mail things back from, but its expensive and no guarantee it will arrive.

Theft insurance? You can get travel insurance, which will have theft coverage included. I used http://www.worldnomads.com/ also some good travel forums there.

You might want to join up on Travellerspoint.com some good info there and they have a great search vehicle for accommodations.

Seemed like I generally was spending $10-$15 on accommodations and about the same on food per day. Some places were much cheaper, but that sort of seemed like a good average. As someone else said that depends on what level of luxury you want to travel at.

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to check out the sites you recommended. worldnomad actually has quick-reference guides on languges for the iPhone :) I'm mostly taking the phone for emergencies and wifi data use, and will not be using it for calls, luckily!
