we're doing a similar 3 week starting late september. not going to hanoi though - been there, got the diarrhea, done that. are you going for moon festival? i have the email of a good tuk tuk driver in angkor (ok, they're mostly all good, but i can recommend this guy). we're staying in phnom penh for a few days as we buzzed through there last year and love it. speaking for vietnam and cambodia, just use city smarts and you should be fine as far as theft. i'm not sure about hostels, we stayed in hotels because honestly, where else can you stay in a 5-star hotel for $70? where we're staying in phnom penh we have a private swimming pool. cheap and amazing. (ja, everyone's budgets are different ;) i havent started any of my research on laos, malaysia, or thailand yet, ug. last year we picked up a cheap backpack in Hoi An and used it to get souvenirs home without much problem, we pack stupid light though so the extra weight was not an issue.

Thanks for the response! Phnom penh is definitely on my list for a longer stopover. Unfortunately I can't afford anything over $10 a night, except for a rare splurge/recuperation.

yea, thats a pretty common budget, so you should do very well over there :) Phnom Penh is really amazing.

oh! also don't forget entry to angkor (if you're going) is kinda pricey. i think it was something like $20 per day.

I heard it was closer to $40, for a 3-day pass. That's one of my main reasons for going, so I'm budgeting well for that section of the trip :D
