Road trip from Vancouver, BC to San Fransisco, Cali

Heyooo. My boyfriend and I have some friends coming in from Norway, they wanted to do a road trip down to San Fransisco, (we're coming from Vancouver BC). their going to be here June 16th to July 1st.
Our plan was to drive down south for a couple of days (a week? not sure how long would be good to see the major things and enjoy the south), we also wanted to take them up to Whistler for a day or two before they go home so we would need time for that.

so for the south, I was wondering if there were any major tourist attractions that would be good for complete out of towners to see along the way down, although I would rather spend most of our time in California, is there anything worthwhile (other then mt. st Helen's) in Oregon or Washington (other then Seattle) that would be sort of on the way and not too far of the main route.
As well, how long would it be (estimated) to drive from the Van city to San Fransisco?

and then once we're there, I'm not sure of all of the touristy things there, I was thinking of going to Universal Studios for a day if it's relatively close or on the way, Alcatraz, and possibly L.A for a day (hollywood and the main drag there).

any suggestions, hints, tips, or information would be greatly appreciated!! I'm clueless about what there is to see in the states along the coast and want to experience as much as possible (with a budget in mind) as none of us have ever really done a road trip in the states or experience much of the pacific coast (in the states obviously). we want to sort of stay away from the same things we can experience here in Vancouver as both myself and my boyfriend have lived here our whole lives.

Thanks again!! :)
