Rail Passes

Quick question for all you travelers:

I'm going to be in Berlin for June  and Salzburg for July and am wondering what to do about trains. I want to travel  all over Germany and Austria as well as spend a long weekend in Italy. Is a  Eurorail pass with these 3 countries my best bet? Or should I just buy-as-I-go?
