New Zealand, here I come!

Hello All,

I have a few questions, all pertaining to New Zealand. I am leaving home (Canada) for New Zealand at the end of August, and will be spending four days in Auckland before settling into my volunteer placement in Wellington for the next two months.
Firstly, if anybody has any ideas/tips for Auckland (including places to eat, places to see, places to party) please let me know, as I will be there alone and would love to enjoy myself!
As for Wellington, I will be busy in my placement, which will be taking up most of my time but we are free on evenings, in addition to having weekends off. Since I will be in Wellington for two months, I would really like to get to know the city/surrounding area. All ideas are welcome, including those similar to what I asked of Auckland.
I am doing this trip completely alone (I have been travelling without my parents for years, but never gone completely alone) and I am so excited!
After my placement in New Zealand, I am flying over to Australia (Melbourne, specifically) to visit some family and stay with a friend I have studying there (I'm sure he knows Melbourne pretty well but any ideas for Melbourne are welcome as well).

I'm sorry I'm being quite vague in my expectations of what I want, maybe telling you a little about myself might help:
20 years old, female, vegetarian, english literature student, movie/film fiend, avid reader, lover of all musics (except for country.. no disrespect), interested in women's issues, as well as animal rights issues, saxaphone player, sport fan (mostly ice hockey.. I am from Canada, right?), and I don't really know how else to describe myself!

Thank you so much for all of your help (in advance)
