i guess this is a late reply to your post but i think it could still help:

despite what anyone says its best to book hostels in certain cities in advance.eastern europe is easier to get around then say places in africa or the middle-east but its better to book at least one or two nights in advance.

i went to spain, france and sweden over my winter break. well, i extended my break by a few weeks to allow enough time but thats another story.

and when i went to a new city i went to hostelworld.com and got a place for at least a night. its better to have a place to drop off your things and sleep for a night than to have to scramble and quickly decide on a place.
after that first night just go around and ask people and then find a place you think will do.

that hostelworld site shows you pictures and comments from previous guests. it helped me a lot.

im leaving for Rome on the 25th of May until early July, then i'll be traveling by train around the rest of Europe. I might go to Japan in august, i havent decided yet.

but i havent been to prague or vienna yet. i plan to.
so, if you could post your thoughts about both that would be great.

thanks,

enjoy your trip!

Thank you for replying. I'll take consideration of your advice and also, I've already gone backpacking through western part of Europe.. so I kinda know what I'm doing to an extent.. haha.

But still.. thank you.
So you don't know when you'll be in prague or vienna then?? I'll be staying with my cousin in prague and I heard vienna isn't worth more than a day or 2, well, hey, I guess that leaves more time for budapest and germany and off the beaten track kinda places. Anyways, best of luck yourself and enjoy.

Right now I'm going to Europe for like 3 weeks by myself, for myself. But then in August I'm going to study abroad in Madrid and then STrasbourg, France but that's through the University.

I'm soooo excited bc in Aug before school starts we're gonna go travel around Europe for orientation so I'm gonna get to go to like Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva, Barcelona, Heidelberg.. and a few other places.

I'm obsessed with traveling, that's all I ever wanna do. I just want to travel, it makes me so happy.

that sounds terrific.

Madrid is such a fun city. I spent a lot of time there when i was in Spain.

If you'd like recommendations of exactly where to go at night let me know. You can have a great time if you know where youre going and a not so great time if you don't.

But you have to go to this little blues bar thats in some alley around the plaza mayor. its the best bar in the city...and theres this other place that makes theyre own sangria(sp?) near the sunday flea market which is awesome too.

i guess that Sol is the party area.
whats great about Spain is that there are so many alleyways to fall into. its almost like a maze.

in every alley or calle there are bars and resturantes. i liked the Sol area but also the Plaza Mayor area which is right next to Sol.

There are steps leading down towards the actual plaza and right on the base of the steps there are some really cool places.

also the Havana Club was pretty nice.

basically, you have to look at Madrid as an adventure. dont plan on going to one place, plan on seeing the entire city each night.

its actually very small. you run into a lot of the same people in one night.

the gay area of the city is okay too. its called Cuenca. There are some good clothing stores and thrift shops there.

Have Fun!!
