Some of the more intelligent reporters have been questioning that Materazzi's punishment opens.
The basic argument is that everybody who gets a red card from now on will claim that they were 'provoked', and since nobody actually heard Materazzi say anything, but he got fined, they have precedent to work from.
It also gives players some licence to react violently for any comment given on the pitch, which is worrying, because banter like that which occured in the World Cup final happens all the time on the pitch, by every player.
All in all, most intelligent commentators claim that FIFA screwed up big time under public pressure.
