isn't it in their contracts that if the club is relegated, they're free to leave?

that's all i've been hearing, though, is that there's a claus or whatever in their contracts that if the team is relegated they're free to transfer.

Absolutely not. There was no clause of this type. Both teams sat down to reach an agreement, which also included Emerson. Happily, Fabio Capello and Madrid had reached a previous agreement. That facilitated things.

Thank God, Emerson no longer plays for the whore of Europe. I was sad every time I saw him in that infamous black and white strip.
