i woke up this morning, a song in my head
and i think to myself "am i alive or dead"
the spent cans and bottles all over the floor
seem like a scene that i have seen before
but i do not know where and i do not know when
lets go to the beginning and straight through the end
if you help me think of what i have seen
maybe then i'd remember the people i've been

so where do we start retracing my steps
to dig up the secrets that i've wanted kept
is it under my mattress or buried in the backyard
locked inside a castle with incompetent guards
it could be in a box sitting on the street
you could walk right by it, with it at your feet
or maybe it's hiding right under my nose
sneaking in between the fibers that make up my clothes

are we looking for something we cannot find?
some sleep at night, a little peace of mind
where are we going, can we look on a map?
there's only one thing between us, but it's a growing gap
who are we looking for, me or you?
because there's one more thing that i'd like to do
i've always wanted to write you a song
