I had the mistaken idea that all Tequila was the same and there were just three main types and good or bad quality. That was until I took a trip to Cancun Mexico. My education began the moment I got off the plane. It was in a Tequila tasting bar in the Cancun Airport.
Tequila is a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, and in the highlands of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. There are over 100 distilleries making over nine hundred brands of tequila in Mexico and over 2,000 brand names have been registered.
Bad Teqila - Joven abogado, which means “young and adulterated”. It’s not 100% agave, This is never good tequila. Just Say No.Quality tequila is made from 100% agave
Tequila is usually bottled in one of five categories:
Blanco ("white") or plata ("silver"): un-aged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation;
Joven ("young") or oro ("gold"): a mixture of blanco tequila and reposado tequila;
Reposado ("rested"): aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels of any size;
Añejo ("aged" or "vintage"): aged a minimum of one year, but less than three years in small oak barrels;
Extra Añejo ("extra aged" or "ultra aged"): aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels;
Bad Tequila:
Baja Agave, Buen Amigo. El Mayor Anejo, Jose Cuervo Especial, Matador. Penjamo, Sauza
Better to Best Tequila
Distillery # 1104 - Brands : Jose Cuervo (various) - Their %100 Agave products are not too shabby. Not great but not too shabby
Distillery # 1360, #1235 & #1368 - Brands : Honorable', El Charro, Corralejo - All average quality, but still better than Cuervo LOL
Distillery # 1128 - Brands : Cazadores - A tasty, moderately priced Tequila. Tastes as good as some costing much more
Distillery # 1142, #1120, #1068 & #1103 - Brands : Puerto Vallarta, Patron, 30-30, Pueblo Viejo All average Tequilas but not bad for the price. Patron is owned by Seagram's which is in turn owned by Playboy enterprises.
Distillery # 1118 & # 1449(reposado only) - Brands : Don Julio - Very nice Tequila - flavorful and smooth
Distillery # 1119 - Brands : Herradura, El Jimador - One of my favorite Tequilas in the world, they still make it the old school way.
Distillery # 1146 & # 1139 - Brands : 1146 Lapiz, Chamucos, Reserva Del Dueno 1139 El Tesoro - Lapiz is not bad but EL Tesoro and Del Dueno are 2 of the best Tequilas on the market
