November 24th - A is for Albania

Nov 23, 2008 20:09

Tungjatjeta (hello)

I found it very surprising that there's such a strong Muslim presence in Albania, but then I know pretty much nothing about this small country.

The BBC has a nice overview page of Albania to introduce those (like me) who know next to nothing about this country.

Amnesty International lists a short article about the difficulties faced by Albania's adult orphans.

UNICEF has a photo essay on books donated to schools in Albania.

A site by Robert Elsie (a Canadian who has devoted himself to the study of Albania).  It includes literary translations, photos, and history.

Here is an Albanian blog and the blog of a non-Albanian living in the country (recommended by the first blogger).

A very recent article about protesting an election code through the use of a hunger strike.

An interview with an Albanian student in the U.S.  and a short day in Albania diary by a volunteer.  I'm not sure when this page was published, so I don't know how well it reflects on life in Albania today.

I'll leave it at that for now.

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008 will be Algeria.
