I know why most of them are sick, but not why all at once. What they're sick with isn't contagious.

That's the part of the why I'm not sure about. People are getting sick because they're being bitten by bugs that can carry diseases. At times when there are more of those particular bugs about, more people get sick. That's the closest guess I can take to what's happening here.
