I can relate, not all the specifics, but definitely some similar things. I gave my Dad an envelope full of cash this year to help him go on an elk hunting trip he's always wanted to take. I had a good year and it felt good to be able to give some of that back. He's always encouraged me even if he didn't always understand what I wanted.
