It's funny how we mature.  I remember in high school, which is as recently as I've seen a couple people who read this, arguing that gay marriage would be the bane of mankind nation-wide.  Now I see evangelists on the news holding up signs citing Leviticus and I wonder how they can be so fucking stupid (and on so many levels ( Read more... )

I think the idea with married people getting a tax break is because of the economic situation many of them enter once they start to depend on one another for financial security. There are of course many different financial situations that may arise, but I think the typical one that had the government concerned was the idea that the husband would end up controlling the finances and whatever capital the husband and wife had would be pooled together under either joint ownership or sole ownership under the husband's name. Having the husband file jointly for the two of them, then, made a lot more sense--back in the day, it was typical that the wife would either not work at all, or work very little, but still have to use the husband's money to pay bills if she controlled any finances at all ( ... )
