...That is, Friday the 13th. It was appropriate, therefore, that today I had two chemistry tests, one regular one one and a quiz for lab. None of my classes have true midterms, but this week still felt like a testing week, since on Monday I had a test for math and on Wednesday a exam for my Ancient and Medieval Cultures class. This means I can really enjoy this weekend, however, since I don't have much to study for.
Instead of staying up late at night to study, I prefer to wake early on the morning of a test, but today I think I spent as much of my time finishing Perdido Street Station as I did preparing for chemistry. I'd heard a lot of different opinions from other fantasy readers about China Mieville's work, and so I was interested in reading it myself. I'm glad I read it, although I don't think it become a favorite. It has flaws, certainly; the nice thing is, however, these flaws aren't the normal flaws of a fantasy novel, or at least they aren't the normal problems the fantasy books I have read. I can't think of any other settings I thought seemed too squalid instead of too clean for realism. Perdido Street Station is the third-to-last of the huge pile of library books I checked out a few weeks ago - I think one of the things I'm enjoying most about our temporary move here is the chance to raid the bookshelves of a different library system. Before Perdido Street Station I read The Grand Tour, Enna Burning, In the Forests of Serre, The Hollow Kingdom, The Hero and the Crown, Beauty (I've finally been reading through Robin Mckinley's works - the batch of books before this one included Spindle's End and The Hero and the Crown), and too many other books to list, since last weekend I purchased Wintersmith and The Pinhoe Egg.
