It's wonderful having an adult child! Last year she had to work, so my husband and I went to our local First Night celebration alone. This year the three of us went and had a great time. Good entertainment, good food, not too cold, not too much snow.
We started out with a performance by the local taiko drum troupe that was marvelous and inspirational.
That's right--inspirational. As the afternoon progressed, I started seeing a project unlike any other I've tackled. It's been just over twenty-four hours, but I was awake for a while in the night thinking about it. If the idea holds through my determination to finish revising my novel before I start anything else, I'll share more. But I don't wanna kill this idea by talking about it too much.
That said, I'm going to do like Twyla Tharp and start with a box. (If you haven't read The Creative Habit, I'd recommend going out right now and doing so.)
The highlight of the evening for me was when my daughter and I were part of the "Dragons and Drums" parade down the outdoor pedestrian-only zone. We were at the front of the parade, playing percussion on junk (another part of my inspiration). Rhythm filled the air, above the crowd on either side, white lights sparkled on dark, leafless branches, and in the center at the end of the street, stood a tree glowing with colored lights. Ahhh! and Awe!
Happy New Year, all!
