From olmue --

1. What Thanksgiving food do you most want to describe? Please do so.
Stuffing! It's only stuffing when it's cooked in the bird. It's right there in the name, people. The mixture cooked outside the bird is dressing. It can be good, but it's never as good true stuffing. Cornbread stuffing is good, so is sausage, and I've had a tasty mixture with cranberries in it, but for Thanksgiving I favor what I grew up with: cheap white bread torn into crumbs and dried overnight, mixed with sauteed celery, onion, plenty of sage and thyme, pepper, and a bit of salt. That's Thanksgiving stuffing.

2. Name three writers you are thankful for both existing and having written marvelous things?
J.R.R. Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, Jane Austen.

3. What makes you thankful for writing right now?

I am thankful that writing (reporter, columnist) gives me a place in my community and I am thankful that writing ficition for children has brought me into a wider community of people for whom both words and children matter. I am thankful that I finally found the right places for my love of words and books.

4. Whose encouragement/advice/criticism has helped you with your writing that you’d like to commemorate?

My fifth and sixth grade teacher, Mrs. White, who had us write, edit, illustrate, and review books, and museinkansas/Deb Pipes for remembering my production in those years and encouraging me still. My critique group, Richmond Writers, who keep encouraging me and whose insights have improved each and every one of my manuscripts. My daughter, booksareadrug , whose persistence in wanting a new "telling" story each and every night got the creative juices flowing all those years ago. HH, who said, "You want to write, that is what you have to do," after I offered to go out and get another office job whenr our septic system failed two weeks after I'd embarked on full-time freelance work. cfaughnan  and saraharonson who run the Novel Writing Retreat in Montpelier every March. The authors and editors they've invited each year have given me new tools for writing, new insights into process, and the other participants have become part of the wider community I mentioned in Number 3.

5. Being a writer changes how you see the world. What specifically do you like about the way you see the world?

Writing lets me see multiple possibilities in the world, lets me enjoy the wide variety of people around me and lets me appreciate the vagaries of human nature. What if is a question that frees me from fatalism and determinism. There are always other options.

6. Are you a pumpkin pie or an apple pie person?

Apple. And could I have a piece of sharp Cheddar to go with it?

7. If you had to choose one picture (preferably funny) to represent Thanksgiving, what would it be?

Joey on "Friends" wearing Phoebe's maternity pants so he had plenty of room for the Thanksgiving feast.

8. If you had to choose one verb which captures Thanksgiving, what would it be?

Roasting (not only the bird, but the house)

I tag whoever is passing out after too much turkey and has time to do this meme.
