I'm starting to like Nick Hornby almost as much as I do Terry Pratchett. Yeah, I admit it, I've got a thing for Brits, and have had since I can remember (and boy did it mess up my spelling for a while).
With SLAM, it isn't the story line alone--skater gets girl pregnant--but the writing that pulled me in. Sam's voice is great. He's slightly befuddled, but basically a good guy trying to do the right thing. His take on the other characters is a pleasure, something to savor. If you haven't read this book, definitely add it to your list.
Plus, there's something for us writers:
"It's just that there comes a point where the facts don't matter anymore, and even though you know everything, you know nothing, because you don't know what anything felt like. That's the thing about stories, isn't it? You can tell someone the facts in ten seconds, if you want to, but the facts are nothing."
--Isn't that why we read novels, and memoirs? Because we want to know how things feel to someone else? It sure is why I read them. (And if someone can tell a story while writing non-fiction, I love that, too.)
I gotta tell you, Nick Hornby wrote some story with this one.
