The Janus Post

A year ago, I was pondering.

Looking back at that entry, I see that I did manage to accomplish my major writing goal, which was to get StT ready to submit--it's with an agent and an editor.

My writing life has been rich, and the most fabulous thing of all is about to happen. A week from Sunday I will set foot on the Vermont College campus as a student in the WCYA MFA program. I've spent this last week feeling the way I think an athlete must feel before an event--I'm ready, I'm prepped, I just need to keep my focus when this thing starts for real. Luckily I've had the preparation of a copyediting text to occupy me. It's just the right project for now. (One way I can tell this is the right project: kmessner tweeted about receiving a particular sort of copyedit right when I was writing about that sort of copyedit. Synchronicity is on my side.)

Other things accomplished in 2011 were unexpected when the year began:

BD's  BFF, who made her home with us since July 2010, found full-time work and now has a room of her own. We knew she would leave us at some point, but I don't think anyone expected it would happen when it did. We're glad she is self-sufficient (if poor--most of us were dirt poor in our twenties, though, right?), and we're glad would could provide a safe haven for her until it was possible.

Seeing the amazing, hilarious Eddie Izzard in Montreal. My favorite stand-up in my favorite city. In a theater that can't hold more than 300, and from seats in the fourth or fifth row. Hard to beat that.

Doing stand-up. When the year started, it was on the Bucket List, but a ways off. I'm so glad I jumped at the chance, though. I'm going to remember that first night on stage for a long, long time. And I'm going to do it again, though probably not for a bit. Laughing is a lovely feeling, but it's even nicer to be the cause of it.

2012 will start off big, with the MFA. I also want to keep taking adventures, both real and creative.

My resolution for 2012 is to become as good at saying "yes" as I am at saying "no," and to recognize which response is right for me.
