An early Thankful Thursday

Nov 23, 2011 18:36

Because tomorrow is the day the U.S. devotes to general thankfulness--along with plenty of food and, for some at least, football, I thought I'd post today.

I'm thankful that we still can celebrate with my parents, who seem to be doing well in their mid-eighties, although age is starting to tell. At the moment, there's also a good chance that BD will get out of work early enough to be able to celebrate with us, as long as we eat a bit later than usual.

I'm also thankful that we didn't get too much snow so that BD's first driving in snow experience in her new car was a mild one. Yes, sometimes I am a worried mom.

The closer I come to January, the more I feel like I'm in one of those big transitions. Right now, my life is in the routine it's had for the last going on five years, with teaching, my writing, and my family. Come January, I'll still have all that, but my writing will be part of being a student. I'm looking forward to it so much, but I also know it's going to change my life, and while I am ready for that, I'm also looking at the good things I have right now.

So I'm thankful for this week of vacation from school and time to savor, time to read good books (Sister Mischief, a wonderful debut by Laura Goode) and time to write (a textbook on copyediting).

I'm also thankful that the universe has given me another sign that I'm doing what I'm meant to be doing. I mentioned last month that I was taking a stand-up class. (I'm not going to blog about that yet, except to say that it's been great and Josie Leavitt is a marvelous teacher as well as one funny woman. And yeah, the performance that is our last class is next week, so maybe that's part of my sense of being in transition--I'm nervous.) It turns out, that class is going to be a bit of prep for many of the lectures at the upcoming VCFA residency, which have humor as their theme. Color me psyched(elic).

Here's wishing you all a Thanksgiving filled with gratitude and harmony.

thankful thursday
