Thankful Thursday

Things do have a way of working out.

BD's BFF arrived at our house in July 2010. She had no other place to go. Literally. Well, unless you think the streets are a place for a not-quite-21-year-old woman. She was thinking she'd be with us a month or two. We told her she could stay as long as it took for her to pull her life together.

Last Saturday she moved into a room of her own, closer to her job. She's been working part-time since late July or early August, and for the last few weeks she's had full-time hours.

The path has not always been smooth for her, but she has dealt and she has come through and she is going to do just fine. She also knows that she has a place with us. She's family, and that's how we treat family. If you need us, we are there.

So this week I am so very thankful:
  • that we had a place for her when she needed it
  • that she has landed on her feet (like the cats she loves, I can't help thinking)
  • that the system in our county (and I do mean county, not country) wasn't so overburdened that it would allow someone to fall between the cracks.
  • that we had a chance to see for ourselves--without directly experiencing it--what it is like to have to navigate that system when you are stressed and depressed and all the rest of it.
I am also thankful, selfishly, that I no longer have to start every day with an hour's drive and can use that time for writing.

There's even more gratitude this week, because I got to spend time with a very dear friend whom I hadn't seen in a couple of years (more on that in a separate post), I got a couple of good laughs at stand-up class, and this morning, once again, I got to share some picture books with Mrs. McCuin's wonderful first graders.

And finally, I am thankful because work on the wip seems to be going well--at least, it did on Tuesday. I have high hopes for the rest of this afternoon and for tomorrow as well.

How's your thankfulness going?
