I'm actually going to post twice today, on slightly different Fearless Friday topics. Here's Post 1:
GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) has proclaimed October 17 - 21 Ally Week. If you have not already done so, please consider signing the Ally Pledge:
I believe all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression deserve to feel safe and supported.
That means I pledge to:
- Not use anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) language or slurs.
- Intervene, if I safely can, in situations where students are being harassed or tell an adult.
- Support efforts to end bullying and harassment.
- Encourage others to be Allies.
You can sign the pledge
here. GLSEN is aimed at students, but if you want to make your own pledge to support all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression, please do.
Of the four components to the pledge, the first is in many ways the most important, because casual use of anti-LGBT language is so prevalent, and so many people use it without thinking. Its use contributes to a climate that permits further, more direct harrassment. If you think this isn't true, mentally substitute racial or ethnic language that we no longer allow and see how offensive it sounds.
In this case, let's not talk the talk, not when it includes offensive language.
