Clearing Decks

With StT off to my trusted beta readers and my summat more or less finished, I've had time to do something I've wanted to get to for ages: get rid of my ancient desk-top computer and make more space.

The last time I showed you my office, back in October, it looked like this:

Rainy afternoons the past few days have allowed me to transform the space into this:

The keyboard drawer also makes for better ergonomics. My shoulders are going to thank me.

Better still, this orientation gives me a view of my touchstones:

The first dollar I ever earned from writing,
my mother reading to my daughter,
my signed "Speak Up" T-shirt from halseanderson,
the killer plot bunny,
and Eddie Izzard.

The one thing I lost when the monitor went away is all the inspirational cookie fortunes and tea-bag tags taped around its perimeter. I did keep my first mantra:

It's taped to the trim, where I see it when I glance up from my laptop, which reminds me to

in my ability and in the story.

Because there is another story. It's starting to grow in the composition book that's on the desk. Triple D is the plot bunny that nibbled on my concentration in yoga a week or so ago, the one I was thankful for yesterday. I don't expect it to flow the way StT did, but I'm looking forward to getting to know this kid and to putting him through some grief.

What about you, do you have any writing touchstones or mantras?
