Today was not the day to sit down at the desk and work without interruptions, so didn't even try. Instead, because it was a gorgeous sunny day, I
hung out 3 loads of laundry.
caught up on reading blogs.
downloaded handouts from the New England SCBWI Conference (only available to those who attended, which is a good idea).
thought about the books I'm going to nominate for next year's Green Mountain Book Award List.
Vermonters who would like to nominate a title are welcome to do so via
this link. The book must have been published in 2006-2010 and must be available in paperback. We invite student nominations and are thrilled to announce that this year's list includes a student nominated title--Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely.
and I
went out to the garden and weeded.
Now it looks like this:
I still need to get in and do the finicky work around the peas (foreground) and the squashes (under the row cover), but the big stuff is done. As I weeded, it struck me that weeding bears a certain resemblance to the editorial process. There's the big picture, developmental, "how does this advance your story?" stuff and then there's the line edits and final copy edits.
Today was a day for the big picture in more ways than one. As I dragged the hoe down the rows (and it's a wonderful triangular-headed hoe from the back shed that is just the right tool for the level of weeding I needed to do today) I kept my thoughts on the re-envisioning of the one picture book. I'm not quite to the point where I'm ready to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, but I'm getting there. I have a sense of who and tone.
Weeding and writing work almost as well together as reading and writing.
To top the day off,
lurban 's post today inspired me to see if my CSA has strawberries in. I had to go there anyway, because I needed some herb starts. Lo and behold, they did. So that's what we'll have for dessert, along with whatever else HH is cooking (he does dinner on his day off, the sweetie).
