Ah, the life of a freelance writer and editor!
At my desk by 8:30 am (since this was a rainy summer day). Check email. Write my weekly column for the local paper. Break for a walk to the post office and corner grocery. Start work on a short free-lance editing job by 11. Work for an hour. Break for lunch with 17-year-old wanna-be-writer daughter. More work on freelance project, which is more involved than anticipated. Phone interruptions, including one from husband saying he will be very late getting home. Stop work early, because need to get supper to leave in time to cover meeting for other local paper. This meeting turns out to be newsworthy. Arrive home to find that husband is home and has eaten. Finish column. Pack bags for meetings and on-the-road work for tomorrow. Type LiveJournal entry and visit with family.
This was a typical day--not my favorite, which would feature uninterrupted work on one project, but one I've learned to manage. Hope I can carve one of those out this week. If that happens, you'll read about it here. But with very few unscheduled blocks of time at home, I've got a big suspicion it won't. However, the work gets done, one way or another, whether I'm in my home office or in a cafe somewhere, taking advantage of the time between meetings.
Any young writers out there looking for a life like this?
