The streaks of cerise in the evening sky made her feel alone. The sunset reminded her of the last time she’d seen her husband before he died. Juliet had been happy then.
She couldn’t deny that she had seen happiness again. She was lying in with her head in his lap, and she loved Mac to death. He was nothing like her first husband, and Juliet knew that was a conscious decision. But sometimes, especially in early August, she missed her first husband. It had been two years since she’d lost him, and almost nine months since she’d met Mac. If everything went according to plan, they would be married in less than a year. And while she was excited, she was scared that she would lose him too.
“I know what you’re thinking, Juliet. I’m not going anywhere. I’m a much nicer man having met you, with a much better life expectancy. I will do my damnedest to make sure you and I live a long, happy, healthy life together.” Mac bent over and kissed her forehead as he massaged her neck and shoulders. “I don’t want you to be widowed twice.”
“I know, believe me, I don’t think that would be at all fair.”
“No. And even if I don’t think life is fair, I think that would be horribly unfair.” Mac smiled at his fiancée, “Juliet, I will make sure you have as little to worry about as humanly possible. I can’t guarantee that I’ll never get hurt, but I'm not going to go looking for fights anymore.”
“Promise?” Juliet asked looking up at Mac. “Really truly promise?”
“You know I would never lie to you, Jules. I promise to do everything in my power to grow old with you.”
