AURORA: Aurora season is pretty much over now. We only have a very narrow window of darkness now, and I'm not staying up for it. Last week, I went for a long drive with two photographer friends. We ended up driving 50 miles up the Steese Hwy, where we could find dark skies and no power lines. The trees look a little soft in some of the photos. The wind was really blowing at times, and with a long exposure, motion is going to make blur.
Here are some photos from that night:
As daybreak arrived (we stayed out until 5am!), we headed for home and stopped at the pipeline viewing area to take a few more photos. This is the Alaska Pipeline that travels 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. It passes right through Fairbanks.
WELCOME HOME!
My friend Stella welcomed home her soldier Jay after a year in Afghanistan. I am honored to have been there with her to welcome him, and to photograph the happy event. I shouldn't have worn mascara, because it was running down my face the entire time I was shooting. What an amazing and emotional experience. I'll never forget when I was going through the same thing. I'm so happy he came home safely to her.
The troops march into the AHA (Alert Holding Area), while the army band plays patriotic music. Then there is a speech and they wait patiently for the command that they are released to their family:
Seeing all those soldiers and knowing her husband is in the group is overwhelming for Stella.
When they spot each other, she runs to him:
In each others arms again:
This photo really touches my heart:
First kiss in 8 months! She hasn't seen him since last July when he came home for R&R.
In their own world... nothing else matters:
Their bodies made a heart between them:
Welcome Home Jay! I'm so happy for you both!
I'm waiting for my friend Amanda to get here. We're going for a drive up the highway. Not sure how far we'll go, but I need to get out of the house and it's a beautiful day.
I hope you're having a beautiful day in your neck of the woods!
