Retro-Rec #3

And it's another two-fer bonus.

One of the things that drives me crazy about media fandom is that all-important (to some) thing about numbers and demographics. TPTB behind so many of the shows/movie we love want guys to watch. The advertisers want guys. I read somewhere that it came as a surprise to FOX that Firefly was popular with women. (Gee, did they ever realize the same was true with X-Files?) And sure, there have been guys in every fandom (pretty much) I've been in since the 70s. But we take a look around in fandom as we know it, and who are we, mostly? Not guys.

I've certainly known more women than men in fandom--especially when it comes to who's writing all those stories. But I had the unique experience, in Voyager fandom, of collaborting on a couple of stories with the wonderful Captain Chris. (Yes, try writing NC-17 stories with a married guy who's not your husband.)

But fandom's an ever-changing beast, and in Firefly more men seem to be venturing into writing. So today's Retro-Rec features bktheirregular. Bruce has written only a handful of Firefly stories, and two of them are absolutely stunning pieces about--Inara.

In Principle, In Practice gives us a picture of Inara, the supposed perfect citizen of the Alliance, weighing the true nature of right and wrong.

Hook, Line and Sinker is a brilliant and logical exploration into some of the nuances of a Companion's job.

Go, read, and send Bruce some feedback--and slap me for failing to say the same thing for the authors in the two previous recs!
