Seven-bingo game (wordfreak vs sneakyofverb) Originally uploaded by
Word Freak. Last week our Gay Pride Week theme brought us many interesting words, including: TOY, FOP, HORNY, SOAPING, RENTALS, FISTS, BI, QUEAN, LABIA and JIZZ*.
* Guess which word is not in the
2006 Official Club and Tournament Word List?
The Theme Word Prize was won by Ray, whose LESBIAN word was voted the most popular. Honourable mention goes to two newcomers: Mike, whose QUEER play was the runner up; and Susan, whose ROCKETS play earned her an astonishing 108 points.
Meanwhile,
sneakyofverb and
wordfreak started off the night with a duel:
sneakyofverb opens up with the bingo-bango-bongo (RENTALS, UNIONIST, ERGATIVE) to take an early lead, 191-49. Then I get my first bingo down (REDCOATS) on my fourth turn. Two turns later,
sneakyofverb plays his fourth bingo (AUBURNS) in his first five turns to take a 295-157 lead.
My second last play is a bingo (SHIRRED), to which
sneakyofverb replies with QI, leaving me trailing 356-411 with a rack of AEEILNT). I realize that the game is most likely his unless I can bingo out to win.
I half-jokingly ask if there's a bingo on my rack and he tells me there's one thru the L in CLUED, but won't help me any further. I take a guess with
TENAILLE and catch
sneakyofverb with AEEJOY? on his rack for an extra 32 points to eke out a win, 456-411.
What a fun game. Afterwards, he tells me I should have been playing in the
CanAm Challenge. What a great sport, that
sneakyofverb. What a fun time at
Scrabble in the City.
So you like to play Scrabble, but aren't quite at this level yet? No worries! I've got a Scrabble club just for you!
Come check us out tonight at Kilgour's pub in the Annex. It's a casual club where people of all ages and abilities meet for fun and games. We get absolute beginners every week. We even drink beer while we play!
Please join us every Monday night for a casual game or two over drinks and/or tasty eats. The fun and games take place at Kilgour's pub on Bloor Street (just east of Bathurst). We start at 7PM and go 'til close to midnight.
Come for a game or come for a drink. Stay as long as you want. Meet other cool people. Throw down a few tiles as you knock back a drink or two. Play a theme word and win a cool prize!
Not everyone who plays with us on Monday nights is so competitive, so don't worry about how good you are or how many words you know. I provide a "cheat sheet" of all the 2- and 3-letter words to get you going, and there's a mostly casual, laid-back vibe at
Scrabble in the City.
I hope you can join us.
