After playing competitive Scrabble all weekend, I took a nap and then headed out for a stroll in the rain tonight. Stopped by at Sonic Boom to see if I could trade in some old CDs and maybe pick up something new. Then I continued on along Bloor Street West and ended up popping into The Green Room. There I found four young, university-aged people huddled around a flat, folding Scrabble board.
They had been meeting regularly for, like, 17 weeks! They've been playing regularly on Sunday nights at a Firkin pub or at The Future Bakery. What's wierder is that they knew of my
Scrabble in the City club. I wonder if they read about it here?
I think they'd fit in quite well with my regular crowd. In any case, they were kind enough to welcome me into their game, which was really cool of them. They were playing a four-handed game and had a hard-cover Oxford dictionary as a word source. But they thought I knew a lot of the acceptable "Scrabble words" so the dictionary wasn't consulted much. They played a very loose game, accepting words like ZEN* and ACADIAN*.
Another one of their regular gang dropped by soon thereafter. I mostly observed their in-progress game and they let me join in on a five-handed game right after. I got down DISHY for over 50 points and ended up bingoing out with something like TAILeRS to win easily. I hope I didn't intimidate them with my high scoring plays. I'd love to see Rachel, Andrea, Tara, Anwin (?) and John (?) out at Kilgour's one of these Monday nights. Especially Rachel. ;o)
