Seriously, it depends on how ancient (if it's beige, it's most likely not worth rescuing) and what she wants to do with it.

it wasn't THAT ancient...just an imac 400. Had the minimum requirements to run OS X, and has never given me grief so far.
Now she won't get past this mac-boot/ shut-down screen...sooo saaaad.
