it wasn't THAT ancient...just an imac 400. Had the minimum requirements to run OS X, and has never given me grief so far. Now she won't get past this mac-boot/ shut-down screen...sooo saaaad.
Too many variables why this can happen. Tough to fully diagnose online. If she's intent on getting it back up and running, have her give me a shout. You can email me (wordfreak@mac.com) if you want to get my phone number. I make house calls.

Seriously, it depends on how ancient (if it's beige, it's most likely not worth rescuing) and what she wants to do with it.
