Studious glances cause no stir
And the secret is ours across the room
We are such good pupils
You study my curves
Subtle but lingering, your eyes brush up and down
Causing ripples across my skin
And I pretend to blush and glance away
All the while, inspecting the expanse of your chest
The width of your shoulders
The depth of your eyes
We are so scholarly - top of the class
Quiet diligence
Keeping secrets to quiz each other
After class

My arms cry out
For something solid to hold
Something to cling to as the wind whips
And lashes my back
Stand firm and tall and let me enclose you
Be my core and let me be
Your salvation

*****

The lines behind your eyes
Pull me under and around
Waving and winding into the place where
My sense of time has no merit
The lines reveal circles of my past and what will be
Everything but now
Because the lines stop now
Until I (you?) breathe again

*****

Aches and chills
Inside and out
You’re so cruel
Inside and out
I love your style
And your arrogance
Burns cold
But you cut me baby
Inside and out

*****

There is a vast emptiness in the bottom of my belly
That nothing can touch
My damage lies in the past and no current fullness
Seems to reach those depths
Joy swims on the surface and my heart has grown
But the dark spots that lie beneath
Will not disappear
Waiting for them to implode keeps me from feeling relief
No matter how you try
How I try
The damage is done

Small girls cry when they are hurt
But the pain does not always pass quickly
Small girls grow and adapt those parts
Into themselves and their futures
Becoming smaller women
For the damage that’s been done
Small girls dry their tears in pillows late at night
And I do too
But now I can’t let it show
It’s so much harder with every
Year that passes by

*****

Ages ago when the world was new
And everything under the sun
Shone brighter than stars
A spark was born in a woman’s eye
A torch to be carried on through the years
To her daughter, and hers
And more and more down the line
Growing and whetting into a beacon
Of joy in one woman’s heart
The day she knew you would be born
I know how that ages old spark feels now
Because it shines in my own eyes
Since I have found you -
My fire
And that light will never die

*****

My heart is very old
Inside small walls
You read histories to me
In a small chair and I reach out
For parts of the past
That you hold in your hands
How do you know
When you are so new?
How do you share
What has been your life
When it starts to fade out?
My heart is so old
But it still kicks so hard
When you are near

Fireworks fell like cascading waterfalls
The boat was so small
And it rocked so easily
Under our bodies
On the fourth of July on the lake
So much heat between the water and the sky
Fireworks fell into our hearts
Hot in our laps
And we rushed to catch them all
Together
Fireworks fell and sizzled
As they hit the water below
We rocked into each other
With our eyes shut tight
But we saw them anyway
On the fourth of July on the lake
So much heat between you and me
As fireworks fell
