Console musings

I'm still a royalty check or two away from buying a next-gen console, but my assumptions have changed sharply from where they were a couple of months ago. Back then, the PS3 was insanely expensive, whereas the XBox was just very expensive. My motivations for an XBox were three: Rock Band, Mass Effect, and Virtua Fighter 5, pretty much in that order. Now it turns out that Mass Effect is coming to the PC, and will probably be better on that platform. Since Rock Band and Virtua Fighter are available on both the PS3 and XBox, that levels the playing field. Plus, there's Ratchet & Clank, which is PS3-exclusive. But the PS3 is still more expensive, right? Well, only in its base cost, it turns out. The XBox is $350, but a second controller runs you $50, and the wi-fi adapter costs an additional $100 on top of that. The PS3 is $400 at the moment, with $50 for the extra controller, but the Wi-Fi is built-in, so that's a factor.

I was just discussing this with Elora, and she raised the big question -- are PS2 controllers compatible with the PS3? It doesn't look that way, since the PS2 controllers have a proprietary interface, and PS3 ones seem to be USB. I found some adapters online, and they seem quite inexpensive, but reviews are mixed at best. Still, if I could keep my wireless Logitech controllers, which I quite like, that would be a substantial cost savings, not to mention my PS2-style guitars and dance pad. So, anybody own a PS3 out there, or know anything about these adapters?
