Strange things are afoot at the Circle K

This is not quite a Pointless College Story. It's really more like half a story, half a random thought. Here in southeastern Pennsylvania, we have a chain of convenience stores called Wawa, named after the town where it was founded. It's pronounced just like you think it would be, and it's a remarkably stupid name if you think about it, but it was so ubiquitous where I grew up that I never did think about it until I got to college. I don't remember exactly how it came up, but it must have been very early freshman year, and I think I asked somebody if the local Uni-Mart was "the same thing as a Wawa." Whoever I was speaking to had never heard the name before, and burst out laughing. After a moment, she asked me if I meant "like a Circle K," which gave me my own moment of culture shock, because I had thought that the Circle K chain had been invented for use in movies, sort of like the 555 area code. (Circle K is primarily in the southwestern U.S., so I'd never seen one before.)

Obviously, there are lots of different convenience store chains, with lots of funny names ("Uni-Mart" always struck me as slightly funny, since, well, there were lots of them). Is there a stranger convenience store name than Wawa, though?

question, pointless stories, college
