Picking up a meme from
Wil Wheaton: "You can have any four classic arcade games in the world. Maintenance and cost aren't a factor, and there's no ROM swapping. Which ones to you pick? It's really tough, but more fun if you don't spend a ton of time thinking about it, so it's right off the top of your head."
OK, then, off the top of my head:
- Quartet: Loved this one in high school, more than Gauntlet, actually. Never got to the end of it.
- S.T.U.N. Runner: Loved this one immediately after high school. Maybe there's not a ton of replayability, but it'd be great to have the sit-on version in the house.
- X-Men: The six-player version, of course. It's just a beat-em-up in the style of Double Dragon, but it's a really good beat-em-up. Plus, awesome cabinet.
- Q*bert: Gotta have a classic game on the list. Games like Asteroids or Space Invaders are fun, but I don't know if they have enough replayability that I'd actually want to own them. Q*bert, though, I'm reasonably good at and would get some play out of.
According to Wheaton, "You also get one pinball machine." I didn't play nearly as much pinball as I did arcade games, but good old Playland in State College had a pretty good pinball selection for the early 90s. The game I actually played most there was
Jurassic Park, but there was a
Doctor Who pinball machine that appeared shortly before I graduated, so I only got to play it a few times. I think I'd take that one.
