bawl, v. [bôl, bŏl]
-Meaning 'to cry loudly, sob, wail,' this word likely started as an imitation of the sound made when animals cried out. One possible origin is Old Icelandic baula 'cow,' which led to Swedish böla and Icelandic baula 'to low like a cow.' The other, more popular theory is that an unknown Scandinavian word that influenced Medieval Latin baulāre 'to bark.' By late Middle English, the word had changed to bawlen 'to bark like a dog, a bark.' In 1570 CE it was baull 'to cry out, yell,' which was the last step before becoming our modern bawl.
