Oshitari is a little surprised when Atobe is assigned to play doubles with Sanada in the game against the Americans. It seems like an odd line-up, especially considering that they are probably two of the strongest players of the assembled Japanese team. Atobe seems fairly amused but the wrinkled brow on Sanada's brow tells Oshitari that he wouldn't really care who he was paired up with, so long as the person dedicated them self to the game.

In a way, Oshitari is glad that he can stay off to the side, watching the two try to find a way to work together. He knows he shouldn't find it humourous when Atobe starts to pout a little as his new serve becomes less effective. Oshitari wants to win, but the affects of struggle have always been interesting to him, especially in more advanced players like his buchou. It's not every day he gets to see Atobe like this, his petulance sticking out against Sanada's quiet, single-minded determination to win.

For whatever reason, Oshitari finds it more intriguing to watch Sanada's face, when it becomes visible for a few seconds before disappearing beneath the long brim of his baseball cap. Sanada's eyes are strong and his arms are fast; his tennis jersey barely has time to move before he shifts to another position on the court. Slowly, he and Atobe begin to support each other. Oshitari smirks when they win, both acting in a way that Kikumaru finds to be too cold.

Atobe, even with all his talk of prowess, is talented. There are things that Oshitari still tries to learn from him during the odd practice match, or when he can take a break from training to study Atobe's newer moves. He can't remember seeing someone like Sanada before: obviously able to do many things, yet not drawing any extra attention to himself.

Maybe that's what encourages him after his own match to follow Sanada down beneath the stadium, pretending he's left something in the small changing room they've been given. He tries to start conversation as they walk but Sanada only answers him politely with "yes" or "no." It frustrates Oshitari while still making him want to learn more, to ask even more questions, no matter how gruff Sanada's voice gets. When Sanada's fingers grip the door handle, Oshitari sighs; he hasn't gotten much information out of the Rikkai vice-captain, his curiosity left far from sated. He is about to walk back when he hears Sanada's voice.

"Why are you asking me all these questions?" The door opens and Sanada walks inside; Oshitari, a little confused, walks in after him. Sanada is busy rifling through his bag, reaching for a water battle before standing up to look at Oshitari, who pushes his glasses up higher onto his nose.

"Learning purposes," says Oshitari, his voice betraying nothing - sounding calm and collected through the lingering frustration.

Sanada takes a few sips from his bottle before putting the cap back on. His baseball cap is pulled low and Oshitari can barely see higher than his lips. "You seemed more like the quiet type," he says evenly.

Oshitari lets out a small noise of amusement. It's true - normally, he is the quiet one, especially when Gakuto is around. Mukahi likes to do more of the talking and Oshitari doesn't mind it. "Sometimes I am," he answers.

Sanada steps forward until they are face to face. He is a few inches taller than Oshitari, who matches his stare with ease. There's a strange look on Sanada's face - whether of anger or bemusement, Oshitari can't really tell. It looks like a mixture of both to him. "You sound a little like Atobe when you say that," explains Sanada eventually.

Oshitari's glasses flash in the light of the small room. "I assure you, he and I are nothing alike."

"You're on the same team," Sanada points out.

"True," Oshitari nods, "but it doesn't make us one and the same. I'm not so concerned with prowess."

Sanada laughs then, just a chuckle. Oshitari flushes, though he doesn't mean to. He stands still when Sanada moves a little closer - doesn't move when Sanada leans in. "Why did you follow me in here?"

Oshitari looks at the ground for a few seconds before answering. "I was curious."

"About me?" asks Sanada.

Oshitari looks at him, but doesn't answer. He notices the way Sanada's looking at him now is very different from the intensity he saw on the courts. The brown eyes are still focused, except there's a fullness to them that seems to have nothing to do with tennis.

Sanada's lips brush his gently before pulling back. He considers Oshitari thoughtfully for a few seconds before leaning in again, tongue pressing between Oshitari's lips, as if he were tasting him. Oshitari opens his mouth a little wider, inviting him in. Their hands stay at their sides, Oshitari's clenched into fists while Sanada grips his water bottle tighter than necessary.

It's Sanada who breaks the kiss, walking past Oshitari to the door. When Oshitari turns around, it is like seeing the same scene of a few minutes previous: Sanada's fingers at the door handle, pulling this time. The baseball cap is low once more, hiding Sanada's eyes when he speaks over his shoulder.

"That should answer your questions," he says in a low voice before opening the door and walking outside, back to the tennis courts to see the first singles match.

Oshitari tries to compose himself in the empty room. "Actually," he says quietly. "It's given me more questions than I anticipated." Pulling the door open with a warm rush of excitement, Oshitari walks out, back to his team - waiting for another moment like this one and wondering if it will be all questions from Sanada as he strives to learn more, or if he'll have any answers as sweet as the ones so recently pressed against his lips.

He sort of hopes it's the latter.
