If you know me, you've probably heard me say I'm an old lady in a young person's body. It's not so much a complaint (although it kind of is) as a simple statement of fact. I had shingles when I was about 14. I got arthritis (from overuse) when I was 16. My back and neck pop, and my knees and ankles creak. I'm nearly physically incapable of staying up past 10pm, especially when I'm running on less than 7 hours of sleep. If I don't get at least 8 hours of sleep, the next day is torture. Compound that two or more days, and I start falling apart pretty quickly. If I know I'll be out late, I do everything within my power to squeeze in an afternoon nap. Plus, I say things like geez, wowsers, and dangit. I sing with a bunch of old ladies (hysterical!) and I ENJOY it.
Now I've got something else to add to my list of ailments. I started playing softball for the Rosenblum Zinners. This means I have softball practice on Tuesdays, and games on Wednesdays and Thursdays. My shoulder has been a little sore the last few weeks, and I've been doing my best to treat it gingerly. Of course, when you're using it to make a throw, and adrenaline and the competitive spirit kick in, I just throw the darn ball shoulder be danged. (See? See how I did that? I said darn and dang in the same sentence! Old!) One very minor perk of going home for the long weekend was a night off from softball game, and no practice Tuesday, combining to give me almost an entire week off. I thought that'd be enough of a rest, but by the end of yesterday's game my shoulder was certainly cranky. It wasn't so much PAINFUL, really, just sore. I figured after a little more rest it'd be fine. And then I started horsing around with the dog.
She had her crazy bird, and we were playing some light tug of war and fetch. Somehow I wrenched my shoulder, and I felt AND heard it pop. Immediately it started burning, and it's been sort of numb, sort of painful/tingly ever since. That cannot be a good thing. I have a game tonight, and I'm honestly hoping for some bench time; if we have a lot of girls show up, I might ask to sit out.
Then again, that competitive spirit might kick in again...
