Recently I've given consideration to what drives some of my attitudes. It occurs to me that at least some of the pettier ways I act or ways I feel sometimes are due to a sense of fairness. As the years have passed I've come to see, and agree with, at least some the world-view of the "card-carrying" conservatives. I have examples in mind of things I once supported but no longer have any patience with.

1) Minority Affairs: I once agreed that some of our minorities were in an unfair situation. I'll even agree that some of them may get unfairly treated now. However I lay the blame for that at the feet of a few of their members. Every time they are given things free that other people have to work hard for, every time they are hostile towards other people just for existing they undermine their fellows work in gaining respect.

2) Unions: I believe there is still a place for the original purpose of Unions but not as individual self-funded organisations. The original purpose of Unions, as I see it, was to seek fair treatment and redress for harm done while working. That no longer seems to be what they seek. While I don't hear of such things any more there was a time when some Unions went on strike to get Dessert at Dinner. Then there are tales of people not pulling their weight while working and the Unions going on strike when they get fired. These are the things the conservatives remember, as well as the hostility directed at them for not being Union Members.

3) Feminism: It's not a minority and never was really but the issues I have with Minority Affairs apply to them too. I agree that some of them are unfairly treated but I get suspicious when I hear tales of supporting males walking into meetings to hear their side and getting hostile glares for being there. They may be isolated incidences but they undermine all the other work.
