Because it was brought up in the Green Room today, and because it has been bugging me since I read an article about it yesterday...
Rue is black. ...so?
I read the book. I read Rue's description. I formed a picture in my mind of what she looked like. Guess what? She looked like the girl that got the movie role.
Not everyone is going to get the same mental-image when it comes to what a character looks like. There is no 100% perfect match that will make everyone happy when it comes to casting a role. But this backlash is just fucking retarded, I'm sorry. Casting agents have a terrible job when it comes to finding actors for book roles. They're doing the best that they can, you know?
And obviously the people that are getting their panties up in a twist over this are not fans of the Southern Vampire/True Blood series. Talk about not casting people that match the books...
Amandla Stenberg did a fantastic job playing Rue and I'm really sad for her that people are reacting like this. In my opinion, she was the only one that was cast exactly as I imagined. <3
