Saturday was the Welcome Home The Heroes Parade here in St Louis, the first parade to honor our vets since the Iraq war ended in December. New York couldn't be bothered. But a grassroots group here figured that if we could throw together a parade for the Cardinals winning the World Series, we bloody well could for our vets. The least we could do was to show up and lend our support.
The Mayor of St Louis - Francis Slay - led the parade down Market A group of Iraqi vets followed. As did the families of those who didn't make it back. i sympathize with them.
It was good to show our support. i wish more Iraq/Afghanistan vets could have made it. Sometimes i think the Vietnam vets always want to make everything about them, so i'm if two minds about the sheer number of them. And i swear, if i saw another motorcycle, i was going to plotz.
We stayed a couple of hours, froze our fingers, waved our flags, and then it was time to come home. Home. We're lucky to have one to come home to. All of us.
