Late For Being Early
Wow, what a slow day at work. No outages, no errors. A couple of tests, but that's all. We even had a short staff as we'd given a few of the folks the day off. Even then...man, i think a lot of the other teams were doing the same to make up for the insane effort put in during the rollout.
i got a call about 1 that my 7:30 flight was cancelled. ZOINK!! i made a quick call to Delta while i checked the website. Apparently our plane broke down in Madison and there was going to be another parallel flight on one of their puddle jumpers. "um...can you get me on the 5:15?" "Let me see...OK, you're on."
"Um, guys, my flight got cancelled and i gotta leave early...have a great weekend!"
So i got to the airport at the right time, had a cocktail and went to the gate. But my luck was running out. The crew was delayed on another inbound flight by weather in the area. So we were a half-hour late boarding. Then that weather made it into the area and there were lightning strikes around the airport which kept us from taking off. Sure, everyone calls them pussies for not taking off in a little lightning until one strikes the plane, it goes down in flames and then later the families sue the airline for millions of dollars for taking off in the lightning. So we sat.
So my 2-1/4-hour lead was reduced to a mere 30 minutes. But that's an extra half-hour i get to spend with Mr Wonderful. And that makes it all worthwhile.
