"Sleek", But Not Shiny

Jun 19, 2008 12:11

WOOF, guys! Work continues to be a total clusterfuck, but in between waiting for my processes to cycle through, i'll try and get through this. If it gets a bit disjointed, it's probably because it was written in fits and starts over the course of three hours and two conference calls.

Thanks for all the input yesterday. It was fun getting some insight into what you thought of some of the stuff i put up. i'll bet y'all voted for lavender just because i said it made me look constipated, didn't you? LOL!! No matter. It's the vox populi, so "my lavender" it is. So, let's see what we have for you to choose from today courtesy of Matt and the Lumiere Place Casino. After an extremely trying and frustrating day at work yesterday, they took us to the Sleek Steakhouse for dinner. But i'm getting ahead of myself.

"The Cold Light of Dawn": We were having coffee yesterday morning and the front door was open waiting for Coco to come back in from her "morning constitutional". Matt noticed the harsh light coming in and went and grabbed my camera to take a couple of shots.

This is the first version where i just darkened the background a little bit. But i felt that the stained glass and the view out the window was too distracting, so i dropped them out all together. Actually, i took a chunk of black from the lower left and stamped about 8 copies across the upper part and faded them together. This other shot was about 8pm after we'd gotten to the restaurant. i'd never been to the Lumiere before and hadn't been to a casino here in the states since '99 when i took Egon to the President (the old steamer Admiral) down by the Arch. It was "Whitman Wednesdays" and all the punters were lining up to get boxes of chocolates - the infamous Whitman's Sampler that you used to get your mom for Mother's Day - in appreciation for dropping what little disposable income they might have in the nickel slots.

"In The Men's Room": OK, so the men's room is bigger than my cubicle by about 4 times. But there is no urinal, only a spotlit toilet in the corner of a black room with a fancy sink spot lit in the adjacent corner. The snootiest mom-n-pop operation you'll come across. But no matter, i like the starkness of this shot even though it makes me look mean. But i was in a mean mood in spite of the three Kettle-n-Clubs i'd had by then, so there you go.

"Red": Outside the men's room, there was a wall of red light panels. Kinda cool, but already dated.

"On The Carpet": After our five-course "tasting meal" which, if i'm not mistaken, went for about $78 a head, the kids were heading to the casino. i dropped by the bar (JJ's, not the yuppie casino bar) instead to commisserate with Robert about our crap days. Jerry was bartending and asked how i was doing and when i told him i had a miserable day, he said "well, you're 11 for 11...what's with everyone? It was a beautiful day!" Well, maybe if you got to be out in it, but i was in cublicle hell and didn't even get to break for lunch. If it hadn't been so late, i would have asked him to take me over the "the Club" for some percussive maintenance. Oh well...time to vote.Poll Thursday Pic-o'-the-Day

...and in the meantime, here is $78 worth of food plus drinks, tax and gratuity

lobster on watermelon with some greens and soy sauce on the side. Interesting.

Pan-seared halibut with some amazing corn, brocotini (?) and some other green stuff.

Beef Spare Ribs braised x 5 hrs with spinach and carrots and cornbread gnocci

Cheese course with plum preserves, a hard, salty white cheese, a blue, a soft white, a cream and some nuts (filberts?). It took me awhile, but i figured out their rooty-patooty dishes. i knew i'd seen them before. Then it hit me! Take out the food, drop in tea lights and you've got a center piece!! They bought these at IKEA!!!!

a brownie, a chocolate-covered strawberry, a trowel of chocolate cake frosting/pudding and a whipped mousse topped with a mint sprig and a berry with some berry sauce drops.
