I think we all (gays) have a great female friend in our life.
Sometimes we meet her before, some other times we meet her after our coming out, and often, in a way or in the other one, she has a very important place in our gay awareness.
I met her after my coming out. She was the first real straight friend who told to about me. From that point on we got more and more attached. I think that if I had been straight she would have been the woman who I'd have married.
Four years ago I had just come back from a trip in US. It was my first (and only) time in San Francisco. I had called her the day after my return in Italy (it was Friday) and she caught my happiness about that great trip. We decided to hang out together for the next Sunday, so I'd have reported her all the awesome things I had done. But we never met. She died even that Sunday in the morning. I can still hear her voice in her last words "what a wonder! Let's meet this Sunday, so you tell me everything".
After her death, every so often and for some weeks, I've been calling her number just to hear her voice recorded on the answering service...
