The marquee at the
Tivoli announced "Today, 'There will be Blood'". They weren't kidding. You'd be hard-pressed to see how this is from the man who brought you "Boogie Nights", but it is an incredible piece of film making and the score, by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, is equally brilliant using modern day instruments and timings as opposed to recycled irish jigs so common in these types of period pieces. Daniel Day-Lewis is vicious, but man does he stick to his guns. He's up against Paul Dano who played the mopey goth son in "Little Miss Sunshine" and he's equally reprehensible here. There is a bit of confusion over the characters and you may still be a little confused at the end. Still, nobody does 'Method' like DDL and here it is totally fitting - his 'Butcher Bill' in "Gangs of New York" was a bit over-the-top. Where "Cloverfield" left me feeling "yeah, neato cool, whatever", this film left me in a contemplative mood. As vicious as he was, i felt myself understanding where he was coming from and sharing his contempt for religious leaders who use the pulpit more for personal gain than to actaully help anybody else. See "Cloverfield" for mindless entertainment...see "There Will Be Blood" to see your soul.
