“Daddy.” She huffed out a huge sigh. Michael couldn’t help but look down at the little girl on the other end of his hand.
“JR.” He was trying to remain calm. But there was something so wrong with the idea that his little girl was starting kindergarten. He was more than happy the girls had come back to the States. But heart-breaking moments like this one made him think maybe it was easier, sometimes, when they were in another country. Then JR’s little hand squeezed his, and he knew he was wrong. Even the pain was better with them here. He smiled as he squatted down to her level.
“What’s wrong, princess?”
“I don’t wanna go.”
“Why not?”
“I want to say wif you ‘stead.”
“I’ll be here when you get out, and I’ll come pick you up. Promise.”
He glanced up at Mel, noticing she was fairing much better than he was, but even she looked choked up.
“But you’ll read the comics wifout me.” This seemed to genuinely concern her.
“I won’t. I promise. I’ll wait for you.” He forced a smile. “And there’s a new shipment in today! I’ll save them just for you.”
“But,” she pulled her hand out from Michael’s and crossed her arms in front of herself. “I still don’t wanna go.” She looked up at Mel. “Can you tell him I don’t hafta go?” Her eyes were pleading with her mother, silently.
Mel bent down next to Michael. “We talked about this. You have to go. And we will all be here when you get out.” She looked at her watch. She was going to have to push that meeting back. But she would be here.
Gus came flying out of the front door, his vintage Spiderman lunchbox Michael had given him for Christmas clutched in his hand. “Are we going or what?” He was grinning. “Do you think Dad will drive us? He said he would.”
Mel rolled her eyes as she stood up. “Gus, I think your father might have had a meet---“ She trailed off as Brian pulled up in his Stingray, her eyes rolling even harder than she knew was possible. “Of course.” She glanced over at Michael who shrugged.
Jenny’s bottom lip had made its way out and was quivering as Michael glanced back down at her. He held his arms out and she let herself be swept up in his hug for just a moment. Then her eyes focused on her big brother who was staring at her.
“Come on Jenny Rebecca.” He held his hand out. “It’ll be okay. We’re going to the same place.” Her eyes brightened up, and she used her hand to shove back from Michael.
“Okay!” She kissed Michael’s cheek softly and grabbed for Gus’ hand.
“Wait!” Michael and Mel both yelled. “You were going to ride with us?” Mel motioned towards the minivan.
“But Mooooooooooom,” She sighed. “Unca Brian’s car is way cooler. And it’s my first day.” Her tiny hands made their way to her hips.
Mel groaned. “Let me get the car seat for you, Brian."
Brian was torn between the utter horror of a car seat being put into his Corvette and the silent victory he had just won.
“You guys can follow behind us.” Brian smirked at Mel and Michael as he climbed into the car and shut the door. “Race you?”
JR and Gus erupted in yells of triumph while Mel and Michael both yelled out, “NO!”
Brian glanced in the backseat at both the kids in the rear view mirror. “Keep your hands inside the ride at all times and remember to tip your driver.”
Gus winked at JR. “Told you, it’ll be okay.”
She held her little hand out for Gus, who quickly grabbed it.
